Seattle, WA
Historical marker placed on June 5, 1947, claims the gas station opened on this site in 1907 was the world's first.
The marker was placed by the Standard Oil Company of California, which may not have known of a station in St. Louis that claimed to have opened in 1905. That station has no marker (its site is now buried under Interstate 64), and both are disputed by a 1913 station in Pittsburgh, whose supporters dismiss the 1905 and 1907 locations as nothing more than solitary pumps with garden hoses.
