This is what the latch mechanism looks like before disassembly. You can see that the previous mechanic wasn't too big on securing cotter pins. All you have to do is remove the cotter pins and take the pins out. This is a good time to clean up the pins. Mine had overspray on them and it was important to get them cleaned up to make reassembly much easier. I marked the top of the door latch strap with an "X" to make sure I got the orientation right during reassembly.
