20220228 4827 SERIES - Coopers Hawk.jpg

Our Yard

Two images of the young Cooper's Hawk perched on top of my feeder support whilst a small Red Squirrel unperturbed continues foraging for dropped seeds on the ground. Sometimes, the Hawk would look right down at the feeding Squirrels (both Reds and Blacks), but, to my knowledge, it never attempted to catch one for lunch. It seemed only interested in the small birds frequenting the feeders, but of course they had mostly scattered and hidden. Occasionally a Chickadee was brave enough to swoop in and grab a seed. The Hawk didn't seem to care for Chickadees either. I only saw it catch some House Sparrows whose numbers have drastically shrunk in the past two weeks.

Top Image: Two images showing my complete feeder arrangement with the Hawk perched on top and a little Red Squirrel actually trying to climb the post.

Full-height, Squirrel-proof, assembly with the Hawk on top and the Squirrel feeding below.

Those squirrels obviously know the hawk's preferred lunch and it's not them. Great series of photos, Hank.

I love your setup, and clearly the Cooper's does too, though he'd have more luck if not sitting right on the feeding station!!

Hank very nice couple of images. The squirrel doesn't seem to be worried. I think I would be.

Great series showing the hawk at the buffet.

that's a well designed and generously stocked feeding station...the squirrel si likely too big for that hawk, and the chickadees too agile and fast..

Terrific capture, Hank. Did he take a crack at the squirrel?
