Really need to differentiate between vinca major (bigleaf) and vinca minor (common). I should have made clear that we have much less aggressive vinca minor, which is native to our area and not considered invasive.

We also plant annual vinca. How many of you knew there were so many varieties?

My neighbors planted it in their backyard and it took over. When it starts to creep through the fence to my side Mr Roundup pays it a visit and convinces it otherwise even though Roundup has been tamed down in recent years it still gets the job done just slower.

I know from experience that mosquitoes love hiding in it. Paul

Dave,
Two comments from Wikipedia:

Vinca major is a commonly grown ornamental plant in temperate gardens for its evergreen foliage, spring flowers, and groundcover or vine use.

Vinca major is an invasive species in temperate parts of the United States, South Africa[3] Australia, and New Zealand. It is especially a common noxious weed 'smothering' native plants and diversity in riparian area and oak woodland habitats of coastal California. It forms dense strands that envelop other plant life and can prevent saplings and shrubs from growing by blocking out the light.

I saw and shot this in the riparian zone of the oak & juniper woodlands of Madera Canyon.

I call vinca a ground cover rather than a weed. We've been planting about 100 square feet of it each year for about five years, for aesthetics and to reduce reliance on mulch.

Yes, Vinca Major.

A weed with pretty flowers.

That’s what I believe it is. I did my first macro with a DIY macro lens on one of these guys, about 10 years back. Paul
