Our Yard

In yesterday's posting which I had entitled "Lunch is served" I think everyone missed lunch or rather the tail feathers of the Sparrow that the Hawk was trying to hide under its spread-out tail; hence, I decided to post this shot where you can better see that the Hawk is eating its prey whilst perched on our back fence.

Since the Hawk has been around my feeder for the last week or so, we've only seen it catch one Sparrow and no other birds and no Squirrels. Amazingly it didn't seem interested in Squirrels at all who often continued feeding on the ground directly below the Hawk. Even the small Red Squirrels were totally ignored by the Hawk. Our House Sparrow population however seems to have declined considerably, so I suspect more were caught than the one we saw. This is a first year Hawk, so perhaps its mother hadn't shown it how to catch a Squirrel yet.

Sorry for the House sparrows, a beautiful Cooper’s hawk shot (and explanation) anyway.

Amazing shot, Hank.

Great looking back photo. It must have to catch a lot of sparrows to make a meal.

I definitely missed the sparrow, so thanks for clarifying and this excellent shot.

it was easy to miss as the sparrow so hard to see...this image shows the plumage well, with white spots echoing the snowy setting..
