Glaucous Gull first cycle
Larger than nearby Herrings, this impressive bird showed a bulky body, long bill, and heavy legs. The degree of primary extension beyond the tail is difficult to determine at this angle. Bill was the typical bright pink with sharply defined black tip; the completely dark tip and dark iris at this date would be indicative of a first-cycle bird. Note it is certainly pale but doesn't lack brownish markings, which can be seen best on the more protected underparts and undertail but also seen mildly on the coverts and scapulars. Primaries were all white.
