Intruder

Boulder, CO

I grow herbs and lettuce in a hydroponic device, called an 'Aerogarden', that has a built-in light on a timer. The seeds come in earth enclosed in a sort of pod, that you insert in one of the holes in the device. When you first plant, you put little plastic cones over the top, which you keep there until they sprout (anything from 1 to 20 days, depending on the herb/leafy thing). When I went to check on things on the third day after planting, I found this creature, that had somehow found its way inside the plastic cone. Naturally, I had to get some photos of it, before liberating it into our front yard.

I'm currently growing lettuce (3), basil (3), parsley (2), dill, thyme, mint, and chives. I'll post progress pictures here in pending, so you can see how quickly the various plants grow.

What are you growing (besides spiders) in your Aerogardens? Maybe share some progress photos with us. Thanks.

I'm grateful that most spiders where we live are small. I too find them fascinating but still shudder when I walk into a web unexpectedly.

I'll post a picture of the Aerogarden in Pending. I have two now. They had a great sale recently, so I bought another, so I could grow more things at once.
As for spiders, I have a visceral dislike of them, which I have consciously tried to overcome. I try to remove them from the house when I can, rather than just squash them, but I often think that I am just slightly delaying their death by putting them outside. But at least they have a chance.

Oh and I’d like to see a wider angle photo of your Aerogarden, sounds quite interesting if you ask me. Paul

Cool story! Pretty sure it’s a young male sac spider, hundreds of sub species. Putting him outside most likely was a death sentence depending on how cold it gets overnight. Many spiders can transform their bodies to tolerate the cold but from what I’ve read it’s a slow process. And apparently they have a pretty potent venom so good call.

When I was a kid I hated spiders, HATED! Countless spiders found their demise on the bottom of my shoe. But as I grew older and wiser ish I realized how fascinating of a natural predator they are and looked at them differently. But and a huge but it is if I find them inside my home they get introduced to the shoe. Paul
