20220209 4229 Merlin2.jpg

Ottawa West

The Merlin spent quite some time standing on a submerged rock or ice ledge and checking out the water, occasionally jumping up as if surprised by something, then pouncing back down as if it wanted to grab something. I am not sure what it was doing, perhaps just watching the waves and/or seeing some fish swim in the water. Here it is starring into the water oblivious to the two Mallards swimming by. The Mallards equally don't seem to be disturbed by the proximity of the Merlin. Perhaps both the Merlin and Mallards realize that they are just to big for the Merlin to capture and fly away with.

Nice to see that they can be together like you captured your analysis makes good sense.
The Merlin must be looking for smaller fish passing by something he could handle.

Mallards are too large for this small merlin! Nice catch anyway :))

Such an interesting sight to capture.

I like how you used a selected focus in this image with the mallards and the Merlin seemly unconcerned about the other's presence. A very interesting combination and interaction. VV

Interesting narrative to go with an impressive image and great collection.

Very interesting behavioral shot. I've seen Eagles do the same... With the nearby waterfowl paying them no attention. The Natural world is fascinating and at time perplexing.

curious behaviour for sure...perhaps it senses food in the water, yet does not know how to retrieve it..

What an interesting shot. The merlin doing its thing, ignored by the mallards. Very cool.
