Southsea 1974

This series is some of the first photo’s I ever took. It was 1974 and Mam, Dad, little sis and me were on holiday in Southsea.
We had taken a boat trip from the end of the pier which went around the naval dockyard in Portsmouth.
As we were getting off the boat we were quickly ushered off the pier as there was a fire in the ballroom.
We stood on the beach and watched as it developed from a bit of smoke to an inferno.
The last picture shows what was left the next day.
They had been filming the Ken Russell film Tommy when an arc light ignited curtains. I hope they were insured.
I came across them this morning in an album Mam left, quality isn't great but they were taken with my first camera a KodaK Instamatic

that's a harrowing tale of your narrow escape...good response to get these pix...pity about the pier, and for such a silly film too, particularly Ann Margaret and the baked beans..

Wow, what a thing to have witnessed first hand. And well documented too.
