Marcescence

Beech trees are marcescent; they retain their leaves throughout the winter.
Come April and snowmelt, they'll still be hanging on, even as the new buds appear.

Subtle colors of the beech leaves bring much beauty to the winter woods.

Nature's positioning of tree limbs with this background is a wall hanger. I also learned a new term. "VVV"

I didn't know that about beech trees, and you got a beautiful capture of them with their leaves in the snow.

perhaps sheltering those new buds is behind leaf retention...in any case, they do lend some pale colour to the stripped down forest...that's a lovely scene with graphic perks from the leaning trunk and 'looper' log..

I wonder if there's any particular advantage to the Beech trees to do so.
