Black-legged Kittiwake adult/near-adult
Different from Ring-billed Gulls, and also helping to separate from Red-legged Kittiwake, this image is included to show the three-toned effect on the upper wing surface. The inner wing tone is similar to the mantle/back, but the primaries and primary coverts are much paler whitish. Finally the small wingtip is almost totally black, with only a tiny gray subterminal spot on P6. Depending on the lighting this three-toned effect can be striking.
Note the tail is all white, lacking the bold black distal band of first-cycle birds.
