Thirroul Pool Inlet Pipes, Thirroul Beach, Illawarra, NSW

After a few days of intense heat around Australia Day, followed by some intense heat and humidity, followed by more rain, followed by southerly changes, we are now sitting in... a mostly pleasant, sunny day, not too hot, but with a bit of wind about and an ocean that is more chopped up than parsley on a chopping board.

Not that you can see much of the last one here. The waves are breaking unevenly and manically around the intake pipes for the Thirroul Pool, which is some considerable way behind me and to my left.

I do trust that you enjoy this shot because the ocean did get me once in the course of taking it. A rogue wave rushed in and soaked my shoes and trousers up to my knees, then vanished as quickly as it came. Always remember... the ocean is out to get you. Always. If it can't kill you, it at least wants to drench you. I could almost hear Poseidon laughing.

This is of course another shot using my new 8mm f/1.8 fisheye lens. Well, almost new. 1/12th of 2022 has already gone, and summer has less than 4 weeks to run. This does not bear thinking about, but doing so is unavoidable since it's looking like any excursions to Europe (the intended target of the fisheye) will now push out to at least 2023.

Still, there are local opportunities to use it as well. I drove down to the beachside café to get a postprandial coffee and, given the state of the surf, decided to take the camera with me. I had already decided that the inlet pipes were going to be the focal point of the shot, and that the fisheye would therefore be the weapon of choice.

I'm pretty happy with the results, if I do say so myself. (Except for forgetting to turn the GPS app on on my phone... again, sigh.)

The fisheye gives a very interesting and different perspective to the world

The fisheye effect and pov make it appear to soar into the sky. V

This is the perfect subject matter for your lens although I imagine you had ancient ruins in mind when you put it on your wish list. V
