Forest Red Gum

flower buds, Eucalyptus tereticornis, Bowen Queensland
The cap (operculum) is evident. This is a feature of most eucalypts. It protects the unopened bud and is shed just prior to flowering.
The shape of bud caps is an important feature identifying species.
"tereticornis" means slenderly horn-shaped, and refers to the shape of the bud cap.

First image in sequence of flower buds, flowers and seed capsules of this species.

the caps are sort of incubators then, and once shed could have further use as golf tees...the plant looks elegant in your thoughtful composition..
