Flock of Curlew

Gollanfield, Highlands, Scotland

Around the middle of December, January and February on one morning each month there is a full moon set that dives below the horizon adjacent to a very pleasing copse of Scots pine at Gollanfield near Nairn. The timing of this corresponds with sunrise directly behind you the photographer. Assuming the weather conditions are favourable there can be some gorgeous soft Earth Shadow light in the sky directly behind the copse of the trees and the moon will drop through the ambient pink light at an intensity that still renders detail in the moon's disc with a single exposure, perfect for that pop song, "Clouds across the moon" shot in soft colourful gloaming light. Of course what elevated this one for me was the presence of some stunning lenticular clouds blowing off the west coast mountains that turned pink from the evolving sunrise and the mass take off of a flock of Curlew which looked ominously like the nasty sub-terranean creatures that burst from their underground lairs in the otherworldly film "Pitch Black".
