a closer look revealed surprisingly little snow on the lower slopes of the north shore mountains, but the air was damp all the same, and the ground icy underfoot

Damp yes, and adds a nice hint of mystery to the mountain forests. But damp and icy underfoot it might not be a good time to explore them.
