The haiku is by Issa, 1813, translated by David G. Lanoue, who says of this haiku: "Issa uses "floating world" (ukiyo) in the old Buddhist sense: the world is temporary and imperfect. Geese migrating south for the winter honk noisily. Issa, as he likes to do, addresses them directly, consoling them that, no matter where they travel, they will always be in the same world of sorrow."
