Before the Americanisation of everything and the appearance of pumpkins at Halloween
about 10-15 years ago, here in Scotland we made our lanterns out of turnips and we went
guising (not trick or treating). We had to sing a song, tell a joke or dook for apples
- we got fruit (usually monkey nuts) and the occasional sweetie. Our version was better.
Trust the Americans and their films and our own laziness for ruining it. Bring back
the turnip Jack O'Lantern, I say.
