Penydarren Tramway Bridge at Quakers Yard.

Difficult bridge to photograph unless you come by canoe or by climbing down an almost sheer rock face. The other side is blighted with big ugly water pipes that connect the reservoirs in the Brecon Beacons to Cardiff.

The original bridge was built of wood in 1802 but was found to be in such a poor and dangerous state that it was replaced by this stone structure in 1815. The Penydarren Tramway was famous as it was the railway that saw the first locomotive drawn train, which included 70 odd unofficial passengers, in the world. Richard Trevithicks 'Locomotion' made the 9.75 mile journey between the Penydarren Ironworks and the Glamorgan Canal at Navigation (now called Abercynon). The journey took 4 hours and 5 minutes.
