Several sculptures representing cats appear around the square. They are the work of an animal sculptor of Orleans origin, Maurice Serreau, who moved to La Romieu for his retirement. In the early 1990s, he began sculpting cats, which he gave to various traders in the town. He then explains that he was inspired by a legend according to which a young orphan, Angeline, saved a couple of cats during a terrible famine, where the population had to resolve to eat all the cats. When prosperity returned, the crops were devoured by the rats and mice which had proliferated. It was then that Angeline freed the cats from the couple she had locked up, and she saved the village from another famine. She ends up looking like a cat herself. This legend is said to be either from the 14th century or from scratch in the 20th century, but it is very popular with visitors.
