The Mrs. & I drove up to Phoenix to rendezvous with an old friend who was visiting. Following a little fit of hiking around the desert, we needed to grab some food & drink, and chose a “brew pub”, actually located in Tempe, Fate Brewing. They had a Reuben on the menu, so I figured that would be a good choice for me.
The $14 Sandwich comes with fries. It did not come with a pickle slice, and when I mentioned that to my friend, he mentioned it to the server, who brought out a small serving of sliced pickles, as well as their “original” Reuben sauce. I applied a generous amount of the “original” Reuben sauce to one of the sandwich halves, and the “new” Reuben sauce to the other. The first bite I took brought about a ¼ of the sandwich et al into my mouth. That first bite of the corned beef yielded not very tender corned beef- I think I what I had bitten into was a large chuck of corned beef, possibly not cooked as well as the rest of the corned beef. Once I got past that, for the rest of the sandwich, the corned beef was tender. I did prefer the “newer” Rueben sauce to the older one. There was an OK amount of Swiss cheese and sauerkraut. The rye bread was toasted ok, except around the edges of the crust, where it was a bit too crunchy for my tastes. The fries were just along for the ride and nothing special. For the price, the Reuben I had a few weeks ago at Dell’s was a much better deal. I think Fate Brewing deserves a B- for their Reuben.
