This sunset at the Scripps Pier took a while to arrive, about 20 minutes after the sun went below the horizon.
Photo Tip - The Right Crop
The brilliant clouds actually wrapped around the right side just as much as this side. I tried doing a panorama that included about 120 degrees of view. Unfortunately, on the entire right side, there wasn't any foreground - just the ocean and clouds.
The view from where I was standing was breath taking. Left, right and above me was incredible colors. However, when trying to make a good composition, the whole right side was just the clouds and ocean. Being there was amazing, but it didn't translate into the photo image.
At first I had a 4:1 crop and the whole right side seemed out of place. Then I backed it down to 3:1 and it still appeared unbalanced. It was as if the left side was crying out for more emphasis, but couldn't get it. Finally, the 2:1 crop had a good feeling. The sunset is incredible and La Jolla Shores with the pier has a good place.
