20210917 8974 SERIES - Greater Yellowlegs r1.jpg

Ottawa West

Five images, the first four consecutive (no's 74,75,76 & 77) and the last one (81) after a few misses. All were taken at 9:22 AM at 10 FPS and a shutter speed of 1/2500; hence the shots were taken 0.1 seconds apart. I was surprised to see that for the first four shots all the consecutive flight poses were wings-up. This made me wonder why I got no wings-down flight poses during this short take-off to landing series. Surely, there must have been wings-down poses during the take-off. Perhaps my frame-rate was synchronized with the wing-beats per second of the bird??? I was not able to find any info on the wing-beats per second for this bird. Total time lapse from the first to the last image was 0.4 seconds. Any thoughts on this appreciated.

Stunning set of shots, Hank, really amazing work. I am not sure what the explanation for your question would be.

That situation is recognizable. Good story and series.

Excellent series of flight shots, and well documented analysis of wingbeat positioning.
I too struggled with a number of frame rates to capture a full sequence of the full-flap of the wings.

It wasn't until I tried the highest frame rate (On present camera body) of 20fps that I managed a more diverse burst of images with different wing positions.
Still a work in process.

excellent, sharp shots...perhaps your shutter speed was so fast that it caught only the wings-up stage...the speed was ideal for clarity, but might not have allowed enough time for the wings to move downwards..
Helen Betts22-Sep-2021 19:38
What an excellent series, even if they are mostly wings up.
