Oaks at Old Baylor

Independence, Texas

Old oaks at the site of Texas' first college.
Independence was originally named Coles Settlement or Cole's Hill for John P. Coles, a member of the "Old Three Hundred" colonists who followed Stephen F. Austin
into Mexican Texas during the early 1820s. The name the community changed shortly after Texas' victory at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836.
In 1845, the Republic of Texas chartered Baylor University.
Independence, one of the wealthiest communities in the Republic and a Baptist center was selected as the university’s site.
In 1886, the college was moved to the City of Waco.
