Mister D and Uncle B hiked the Maude Island Trail, which can be accessed from Quadra Island.
This photo shows Seymour Narrows, where the Discovery Passage becomes very narrow. Mister D
is standing on the edge of Maude Island and Vancouver Island is across the passage.
This location is very near the famous Ripple Rock explosion. Ripple Rock is an underground
mountain in Seymour Narrows that was responsible for numerous boat wrecks and deaths. In 1791
George Vancouver described it as "one of the vilest stretches of water in the world". In the
1950s the Canadian government conducted a multi-year project to tunnel under the ocean from
Maude Island into Ripple Rock and load it with explosives. In 1958 the explosives were
detonated, and the goal of blowing the top off of Ripple Rock was achieved.
Here is a short four minute video about the explosion.

There is a longer 27 minute documentary made by Dupont back in the day.
It provides lots of information about the engineering project and is well
worth watching if you like that kind of thing.
