It must have been getting close to opening day. Dad was apparently focused on baseball. The catcher just has to be Yogi Berra, native of “the Hill” in St. Louis who became famous as a Yankee star. Who else looked like that? Plus, Dad loved Yogi! These sketches indicate what always fascinated me about my father. How did he create in his mind a scene like the throw-out at the bottom and transfer it in detail to paper? I suppose it is possible he was looking at a photograph, but that is highly unlikely in this as well as many other cases. The sketch of a “grip” on a baseball bat is a good example of Dad practicing his art. Dad practiced drawing parts of the anatomy like only an artist would do. (Gee, I think that grip is a good way to get a broken thumb!)
