This morning I went out to my makeshift studio at the airport with the intention of doing a comparison of the G15, G5 X and the G5 X MkII. I figured that I could do a comparison at three different ISO values (125, 1000 and 3200) and the long and short focal lengths. Conducting the experiment was easy. I had all 18 photos in the bag and headed home very anxious to pop them into Lightroom and have a look.
I got a surprise! The high ISO images from my brand new G5 X MKII were much noisier than the other two cameras. Bummer. In today's image the G5 X MkII is the top and the G5 X is the bottom. The top one is clearly noisier. Then the light came on in the attic. How were the High ISO noise reductions set? Sure enough there was a difference. The top had noise reduction turned off and the bottom had it set on normal. I hate it when variables get loose. Looks like another experiment is in the offing.
That’s the problem with these little cameras - they’re too complicated! I’ve got a Leica C-Lux P&S, 10 times more complicated than my Nikon Z7, and 100 times more complex than my Leica M240!
