A giant is the magnified representation of a prominent figure in the township, often nobles or popular figures in traditional attire. In Catalonia, the first documented giant dates from 1424, and currently there are about 600 groups of giants who walk and make the giants dance at major festivals and in all the towns, cities and countries where they are invited. The group of giants is made up of people of all ages: young and old among musicians, bearers and giant dancers as well as all those who accompany them and help in whatever is needed. It is an activity that can be done as a family and allows you to meet new places and many different people, while maintaining a tradition deeply rooted in culture. Giants are not only a heritage of Catalan popular and traditional culture, as we also find them all over the world.In Malgrat de Mar we have two pairs of giants: Eulàlia and Bernat and Nicolau and Rita. The first ones were presented on August 12, 1990 and represent the first mayor Bernat Estornell and his wife Eulàlia, who in 1336 obtained the staff of mayors of Malgrat. The second were Nicolau and Rita, presented on August 11, 2007 and represent the jobs that have been spent and are present in our town. Rita represents the agriculture of our town, very important still today, and Nicolau, the mining profession, so important at the beginning of 1900.
