Hownsgill viaduct

11 years ago there were no anti-suicide fences (see below).
Sadly they have become necessary since. There was one suicide from the bridge every two weeks in the first half of 2011 and five between January and August 2012. The fences were installed in late 2012. Despite this, in August 2017 a woman fell to her death from the "wrong" side of the anti-suicide fence.
As Glenn says it doesn't address the real problem it just moves it somewhere else.

So sad that people were taking their lives from this bridge at such an alarming rate. At least the fences have worked and helped apart from one lady....

So sad to read. Two great photos documenting this site.
There was just another suicide at the Vessel in NYC and they have closed it again.
I'm glad I went and took photo a while back.

I thought of a scene from a futuristic Sci-Fi film and then I read the info. I agree with Glenn.

A depressing sight, especially compared to the earlier photo. You've done a good job of documenting the mood of this fence.

They add some interest with the repeating patterns, shame they are needed though.

That’s awful, it reminds me of the cliffs at Beachy Head and the number of suicides there
they have a warden on duty to try and dissuade folk from jumping!
Before I read your info the image struck me as chilling.

A sad and eerie looking walkway. I'd look for another route!

A sad statement on society; building an obstacle that doesn't address the problem.

Words fail me....

Very sad history for what otherwise looks like a lovely place for a walk.

an unfortunate development that makes it appear like a prison walkway...fine shot to show that 'long walk' for anyone here..
