Villa Vídua de Can Sala

This villa is one of a group of houses that were built in the town during the early years of the twentieth century for the well-to-do families in Malgrat de Mar or for vacationers from Barcelona who would spend some time in our town. Vídua de can Sala Villa was built after Josefa Garriga Anglada’s request in 1909. At the same time, her family bought the property next door that became a knitwear factory, then was converted into Bombay Hotel and, nowadays, hosts the Municipal Archives. The architect of the tower was Esteve Rocafort i Carreras, from the nearby town of Blanes. In 1928,Francesc Serra i Bonet acquired the two properties. During the Spanish Civil War, the house was confiscated by the Local Committee of Antifascist Militias and was assigned to doctor Brull so he could use it as a clinic and home. After the war, the tower was used by the Falange, a fascist organisation related to the new extreme right-wing government. In 1942, the family Riera Oliveras acquired the two properties. At the beginning of the 60’s, they renovated the building next to the villa to build the Bombay Hotel. However, in 1966, after various notation warnings of attachment, both buildings were awarded by auction to Josep Fradera Butsems. Despite the change of ownership, the Hotel Bombay was open until 1973.

The amazing architecture is beautifully enhanced by the golden lighting and shadow patterns. The history you provided is both extremely interesting plus an added bonus. VV
