The former British Rail (BR) Research & Development Department Vehicle Dynamics Unit, RDB 975000 (Laboratory 1) was looking a bit the worse for wear when photographed at Ruddington on the Great Central Railway - Nottingham (GCRN) on 15 July 2012. The vehicle was converted in 1970 from BR Mk.1 Restaurant Second Open (RSO) 1003 (built at York Works in 1951) and had lain out of use at Derby for many years before entering preservation in May 2011. The lowered section of roof could be fitted with a pantograph which could then be observed in operation through windows in the roof.
