Ottawa West

One image, three merged shots, of spawning Carp. These Carp were thrashing about in the shallow waters near the shore. The males frantically competing to seed their sperm over the eggs being laid by the females. So much so that the males reportedly often ram the females' bellies to force them to expel their eggs so that they, the males, would be the first in line to fertilize the eggs. I and an other photographer watched this frenzied activity for some considerable time.

You captured the action of them churning the water perfectly. I've seen this every year in the Ottawa River.

Hank, terrific image of these Carp spawning. They certainly do look like they have lost their minds.

Nice capture of the frantic behaviour of these fish.

Years ago, in the farming towns of central & western Massachusetts, we use to net them and toss them into the fields to be used for fertilizer - doubt that they do that today.
