DSCF2924_two flies.JPG

diffused sunlight-,mild backlighting

While I was photographing some very tiny little black bees that were visiting this chive plant today in good numbers, these two flies happened to land very close to my kneeling shooting position. I took several frames of the two flies, but at this working distance, which is about four inches from the front of the lens, it was difficult to get them both into acceptable focus. DOF at f/9.5 at this distance would not span even the _width_ of a common housefly so I clicked down to f/13. If the front edge of the body was in focus, the cilia on the far side of the fly was unfortunately, out of focus. This is really what I call a 'macro grab shot'....they buzzed in, I shot handheld from a kneeling position, and then they were off! Total time, maybe 10 seconds.

Reduced to web size, approx 1000 pixels wide, the focus is acceptably well-positioned to render "most" of the two flies in good focus. Keep in mind that even at 1000x pixels wide, the flies are represented much, much larger than they actually are--by something like 15 to 16 times their actual,real-world lengths.
