One regret that I have is that I failed to really capture the area that I used to live in before moving down the coast. The place was hardly idyllic, but it was a specific time and place that probably not many other people thought to capture either meaning that what it was like in the late 1990s and early 2000s is probably lost to history.
I haven't really made a systematic approach to doing that documentation in my current area either, but at least I'm more aware of it. This shot, for example is not merely a shot of a sunrise. Rather, it captures the general vibe of what life is like in a regional coastal town on a weekend.
We have people taking in the sunrise or exercising, the warm light of the sunrise over the sea hitting the buildings on the coast, and of course a cafe for breakfast by the water. In this case, Ruby's Cafe on Bulli Beach. For a time it was our regular haunt on Sunday mornings. Then a few years back, the ownership changed and not for the better. I hear that they've improved since then, and it's probably worth giving them a try once more.
I don't know whether the photo would really have any impact on anyone who hasn't visited the area, or how well it would make them relate to what it is like to live here, but as someone who does I think this captures the spirit which can be found quite easily through this area on a clear Sunday morning.
