Once an important port for shipping grain and a coal mining town. The town was at the end of the first telegraph cable
from Scandinavia in 1868, which was laid from Jutland, Denmark. The town now boasts the longest promenade in
Northumberland, extending from behind where I stood to take this photograph, right around the bay to the very far side
in the distance.
