Eastern skunk cabbage one of the year's first wildflowers. It is able to melt its way through snow and ice by breaking down starch that it has stored over the winter in its roots and rhizome in a process called thermogenesis. It has a putrid, foul smelling odor that attracts early pollinators like flies.
