Remembering Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), American poet

I heard that today Lawrence Ferlinghetti died, just shy of his 102nd birthday. I discovered his poetry when I was about 15, initially through his poem "Dog" and fell in love with his work which excelled at painting with words. I still have my copy of "A Coney Island of the Mind" all these decades later, the first of his books I bought. Ferlinghetti published many of the seminal Beat writers (Ginsberg, Kerouac), was a prolific poet himself though declined to be called a Beat poet. But he is perhaps equally well known as the proprietor of City Lights Books in San Francisco, iconic as Shakespeare & Company in Paris.

What a life he lived! Rich and Full. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Ferlinghetti

We visited City Lights some years ago. He lived a full and rich life and his poetry will survive and inspire.

My dogs have the same freedom. I often wonder what goes on in their mind, if they hope to meet their doggie neighbour or poop on someone else’s property as their friends do ours.

an apt poem to inspire you, as dogs still do...Ferlinghetti was a giant, as much for his publishing as his poetry...there are 5 City Lights books on the shelf here, including Pictures of the Gone World, and slender volumes of verse by Ginsberg, Lowry, and even Picasso, so easy to appreciate the great man's contribution to freeing our minds at a time when that was needed..
