Passing by Housesteads Fort, Hadrian's Wall goes off in the distance through the woods.
The wall was built by the Emperor Hadrian around 122 AD to guard the northern frontier of
the Roman Empire. The wall was a multi-cultural occupied military zone of mile-castles,
barracks, ramparts, forts and settlements; sprawling almost 80 miles in length from
the Irish Sea across England to the North Sea.
