Emerald Ash Borer Damage

We met a nice gentleman today during our walk. He was removing tree trunks damaged by the emerald ash borer. He was kind enough to give us a detailed explanation of the damage and how to spot diseased trees. I had been wondering why a whole row of tress had been cut down along one of the trails. They were taken down because the ash borer has infected many trees in this park. So now I will have something else to do in addition to walking. The trees effected can be easily spotted, because their barks show rusty brown blotches. We were told they are caused by woodpeckers trying to reach the emerald ash borers under the bark.
In this picture you can see the patterns created by the ash borer under the bark.

Excellent documentary style... strange to think that such a small and beautiful (colourwise) animal can cause such harm ~V~
