Gago Coutinno - Sacadura Cabral Plane

Lisbon, Portugal

On March 24 1922 Gago Coutinho and Sacdura Cabral departed from Lisbon, Portugal.
Seventy nine days later they arrived in Rio do Janerio, Brazil.
The Santa Cruz Fairey Seaplane did not have the fuel capacity for the entire trip.
The aviators were shadowed by a support ship.
On the journey down the Brazilian coast the plane went down in a heavy storm.
The pilots were rescued and the British loaned them a plane to complete their trip.
Gago Coutinho also adapted the marine sextant to allow navigation without visual reference to the real horizon.
A very useful instrument when flying through a cloud or heavy fog.
This can be seen right near Belem Tower.
