When I get a new set of factory brass, I spend the time to see what is in the bag. You might expect all the pieces to be within close tolerances, but they are not. I measure length and lay them out in a sort of histogram. Remembering that you can't make a cartridge longer, I figure out a range and start trimming the long ones. In this case, they were 1.274 to 1.294 inches. So I set up my target length of 1.277 +/-.002 and started trimming. The real point of this exercise is to get consistent length so that they all perform the same in the dies when reloading. This is time consuming, but worth it. I name every group of brass, and this one is 44 alpha.
