Picking Up Groceries

Isn’t what it used to be…
Order online and pick it up in the parking lot.
Push a button and it gets mailed to you,
sometimes overnight, from Amazon!
When you do go inside you can check out your
own items thanks to UPCs and improving technologies.
I kind of miss the check out line.
In a small town it’s the same friendly faces running the register
and asking how you or your family are and you asking after theirs.
Telling jokes or stories as they check out and bag your goodies.
Sometimes the whole line can be in on it and everyone adds to the story.
I think it is a social ritual that will be missed by anyone who has experienced it!

The world has changed everywhere. Great idea for contactless shopping. Yes I still shop at the local supermarket but more and more is increasingly evolving to self service so no chat in the checkout line.

I am using ‘click and collect’ from our local supermarket.
I’m very I impressed with the service but do miss the personal contact. When you arrive you give your name over a speaker and open the boot (trunk). The assistant wheels a trolley out with all the goods and puts them in the boot and you close it. All is sorted into paper carrier bags which I recycle to the local Red Cross site. It’s efficient and saves me time but what for.....?

I can understand what you mean of convivial in a small town. That talk isn't as prolonged in a large city with lots of aisles of check out

It is that personal connection that so many miss. Ordering online is not the same, but is prudent in these times. V

I totally agree. I'm one who loves to strike up a conversation with anyone nearby when I'm waiting around. I miss seeing the 'regulars' at the store. Now I use curbside and fiddle with my phone while waiting. Such a loss.

I know I miss the normal human to human mundane contact that we all used to take for granted. It's interesting to see how things are being done now where you live.

Out local is part of a large chain, but the staff are all local. I've chosen to have delivery for almost a year simply for safety reasons....self checkout will never be my choice. :)

Cool shot. Luckily for us, our two area Supermarkets are both privately owned and not part of a chain. For example, at Windmill Farms Market, I know everybody by name from the manager to the checkers, the butchers and the people stocking shelves. Everyone is always friendly and I always talk to them. I avoid large chain stores.
