Polar dip

Rockcliffe Park

I'd been wondering what this heart-shaped hole in the ice was all about; thought perhaps made for a loved one, maybe a message to the planet! Today I found out that it is the work of a small group of enthusiasts who come daily to immerse themselves in the icy water, believing it strengthens the body, makes them healthy, etc. There was a person clearing frozen chunks of ice out of the pond, dressed in a bathing suit, whose legs were the colour of a tomato. It was -11 when I walked by with a windchill of -17. This photo shows the hole from a few days ago, it is now less heart-shaped and a bit bigger.

Amazing story, hard to believe people do that.

Crazy!!! When I first saw the thumbnail, I knew it had to be some kind of hole in the ice for "dipping". But I didn't realize that it was REALLY a mini polar plunge and not some sort of patch of thermal warm water in a snowy landscape. I wonder why it has been cut in the shape of a heart . Fascinating capture. But crazy people who use it. Makes me think of frost bite.

I can't imagine taking a dip in that water! Yikes. Neat photo.

We have "Polar Dips" around here but they are done for charity fundraisers and have EMS on hand.

It is been said that cold is healthy, if it is dry cold then a dip might be cool! V

Well it's to be hoped someone is with them to fish them out when their heart fails...seen so much stupidity in this past year nothing surprises me.

just a lovely image but I'm not going to do it and leave it to the enthusiasts, I don't think my heart could take it anymore BV
Hank Vander Velde09-Jan-2021 02:27
You must be kidding Christine. Some people just don't realize the extent of their stupidity.
Dennis Hoyne09-Jan-2021 02:00
They do that in the lakes around here too. I'm not game for such activities though.

Very interesting looking but seems pretty bizarre to me. Nicely captured in any case. V.

Wow! I was out with my camera very early this morning with toe & hand warmers and long johns. Good on them but I won’t be joining the swim.

must be quite the bracing experience, and would certainly test one's heart health...a fascinating bit of folk life here..

Oh my goodness! Makes for a great photo, but ouch! Seems it's getting popular - my son swam on new years day, though nothing like this ice bath!
Pierre Martin08-Jan-2021 21:22

Walter Otto Koenig08-Jan-2021 20:59
It's very healthy and invigorating, especially when other people do it.
Isabel Cutler08-Jan-2021 20:31
