I was wrong in my previous narrative. The fine is $5000 nd not $500
Still, not really strictly enforced. The sign is for tourists who like to wade across for a photo op.
The people who live along this part of the river don't want a wall. This area was once part of Mexico before the Texas War for Independence (1835 -1836).
The people live on BOTH sides of the border, relatives go back an forth in a rowboat to work on family ranches or visit grandmother.
The desert stretches for miles and miles in all directions and can easily kill you if you aren't well equipped.
Trump made Texas add more Border Patrol, but Texas put the checkpoints on the 3 highways that lead away from Mexico,
but the checkpoints are located 50 - 75 miles inside the U.S.
instead of closer to these small towns.
