cumbungi

pond ecology changes during winter, with shorter plants succumbing to rising water and colder (note the ice) temperatures...catttail stalks still stand though, and already red-winged blackbirds were darting among them

cattails go by the same name in the US, where they are also referred to as reeds...in Britain they are called bulrushes, in New Zealand the word is raupo, and best of all in Australia they are named cumbungi

We call them cattails too. I like the forming ice you captured in this well composed photograph. V

A nice well captured Fall-scene and an educational explanation. As kids in the Netherlands we used to call them cigar plants.

What an education about the reeds! See, that’s why I like coming here, I always learn something new. Of course Australia has the coolest name.

Excellent lighting and well composed....thanks for the cattail's botanical nomenclature but cumbungi is quite a tongue twister...V

Good clear shot of the bulrushes in this harsh time of year. V

The Redwing Blackbirds hang around late in your area. Nice shot.

Well composed and nicely lit capture of these cattails. Interesting narrative, too, although I never heard of cumbungi when I was living in Australia!

Love ponds like this when first ice forms. Surprised there are red-wingeds about.

Nice detail and tones. They're called "Rohrkolben" in German, which sounds more like a part of a steam locomotive to me.
