Gall midge (Rhopalomyia hirtipes) gall on goldenrod

Burnt Lands Provincial Park

This is a large gall made by a gall midge in the Cecidomyidae family. It is a terminal gall and you can see how it has disrupted the flower formation. Thanks to iNaturalist for ID and for the information that these galls are quite rare.
