Cor anglais - English horn - split key

Esch

It is neither a horn nor is it English. Apparently the forerunner of the present instrument used to look like a hunter's horn. The 'anglais' comes from what was first of all 'anglé', meaning 'at an angle'. The instrument belongs to the family of double-reed instruments, and is lower in tone than the oboe.
