Kinnikinnick

Whytecliff Park, West Vancouver

Common Bearberry, native to the northwest coast...First Nations people called it Kinnikinnick, meaning 'smoking mixture', and in fact dried the leaves and lit up...it was also used medicinally, to treat kidney afflictions...the fruit is edible but evidently a bit on the mealy side

Great shot of this pretty plant; the name Kinnikinnick is lovely, it made the plant easy to remember because of the pretty name. V
