25 - 604 unmarked graves at Clemson University - i2817

604 unmarked graves of slaves, laboring prisoners, servants, share croppers, Black laborers
at Fort Hill Plantation, founded by John C. Calhoun, at Clemson University, found using
ground penetrating radar (GPR).
Burials at the Plantation are believed to have occurred from 1830-1865,
and later from 1890-1915 during the construction of Clemson University.
Graves are being located, occupants determined where possible. The cemetery, Woodland Cemetery
holds the Calhoun family, and now past Clemson University faculty and administrators. However, it
was originally a Black cemetery whose interred were buried there until about 1920.

This is so powerful and sad. I can imagine there are a lot of unmarked graves around. V

Thanks for posting this. The world is a complicated place with a complicated history. It always has been and always will be. No space is pristine.
