How do you create a reservoir to store clean water. Built huge dams and flood a valley. At one end there should be a large dam with sluices to let water flow out as needed into a river or pipes to channel the water flow to big cities. This is basically what happened here. There are miles of walkways and hiking trails to walk around the whole reservoir. It is very unique and beautifully designed. Once all the dams were in place all water outlets were closed and the former valley was slowly flooded. Occasionally access to the reservoir is closed to the public. Last time this happenend was at the beginning of the pandemic. It was partially reopened on June 15, 2020. Hiking trails are open, fishing from canoes and cayaks is allowed. We have seen small eletric motorboats glide along the shorelines. At one access point you can see groups of birdlovers congregate and count migrating raptors. Some of them carry enormous cameras and binoculars to help identify species. Unfortunately, the visitor center is still closed and we have seen no porta johns at this time.
