low man

Point Grey

First Nations artists Bill Reid and Doug Cranmer were the creative spirits behind the Haida Village project...the totem poles by the houses denote lineage and clan of a family, and the freestanding ones are mortuary poles

the well used expression 'low man on the totem pole' is misleading...the bottom figure on a mortuary pole is the most important, and depicts the person to whom the memorial is dedicated

Fine capture of this totem pole. It is a good thing that some are housed in the protective environment of museums, but they look their best when out in the west coast weather.
